Stone & Mystics (2024)

Single channel 4K video. 7m38s.

Stone & Mystics is an absurdist psychogeography film that follows an inquisitive yet unreliable narrator as she attempts to unravel the tall tales and rumors surrounding the Cornish countryside. This film uses memory’s inability to reach a point of stasis by highlighting its existence “in permanent evolution” to prompt viewers to ponder what truly warrants remembrance. Embracing the aesthetics of slow cinema, Stone & Mystics offers a meditative journey that leans into the absurdity of human perception and the stories we construct around historical landmarks and folklore.

Narrated by Kia Marie Frank. Original score composed and performed by Jamie Kunselman.

“[Memory] remains in permanent evolution, open to the dialectic of remembering and forgetting, unconscious of its successive deformations, vulnerable to manipulation and appropriation, susceptible to being long dormant and periodically revived.” - Pierre Nora

This piece was possible thanks to the Dark Skies, Wild Seas, and Ancient Places residency in Cornwall that was hosted by Mayes Creative.
